Sanjeev Saxena, MD, MBA, FACC
Dr. Saxena is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine with subspecialty certification in cardiovascular disease.
Dr Saxena graduated from the University of Georgia, cum laude, with a bachelors of science degree in biology. He received his doctorate in medicine from the Medical College of Georgia, in Augusta, GA. He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Hershey Medical Center of Penn State University. While he was at Penn State, he was accepted into the prestigious cardiovascular medicine fellowship at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center and affiliated hospitals where he completed his fellowship. He received his MBA from Auburn University in 2013.
Dr. Saxena has been an instructor in cardiovascular disease at the University of Miami School of Medicine's Medical Training and Simulation Lab, as well as the course director for the cardiology training for Miami-Dade Community College Physician Assistant program. He has been an Advanced Cardiac Life Support instructor, and has taught medical students at Penn State University and University of Miami schools of medicine during his specialty training.
During his residency, Dr. Saxena won a national award from the American College of Physicians for original clinical research in the area of cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Saxena serves as an expert witness in cardiovascular medicine, works as a consultant to various pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers, performs peer reviews for cardiovascular imaging insurance authorizations, and teaching nurses, mid-levels, and other physicians in various aspects of cardiovascular medicine.
Dr. Saxena has lived in the United States since age 3, and became a US citizen in 1996. He has served on the state board of directors of the Alabama Make-a-Wish Foundation. He also serves on the advisory board of BBVA Compass Bank. He supports numerous charities such as the American Red Cross, the McKamey animal shelter, and local schools in an effort to give back to his community. He has many interests, including traveling, photography, gardening, and woodworking. He has made Fort Payne his home for the last seventeen years.
M. Rene Banks, MSN, NP-C
Rene Banks is the newest member of the Appalachian Cardiovascular Associates team. A skilled and compassionate nurse, Rene completed her Associate of Science in Nursing from Northeast Alabama Community College in 2002. She worked as an operating room nurse at DeKalb Regional Medical Center for 10 years . She also worked for the Cancer Care Center DeKalb for two years.
She then decided to further her education and completed her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from Jacksonville State University in 2009 then went on to complete her training as a Family Nurse Practitioner at UAH in 2012. After graduation from UAH she worked in the urgent care setting and family practice setting for 3 years. Rene has been a part of Appalachian Cardiovascular Associates since April 2015.
Her broad base of experience in oncology, urgent care, family medicine, and surgical acute care have provided a strong foundation for her in cardiovascular medicine. Rene enjoys working as a nurse practitioner for the challenge of lifelong continued learning. She feels that cardiology has been a great avenue to propel her growth, and to provide preventive care and patient education that makes a difference in people’s lives.
